Facts: Wild cats are any of a number of species of undomesticated felines, large and small. This does not include cats removed from domestication or the descendents of these, which are known as feral cats. (While there is a species of cat closely related to domestic cats actually known as the "wild cat", this site does not directly address them.) Types of wild cat include tigers, lions, pumas, jaguars, leopards, lynxes, ocelots, bobcats, cougars, and panthers, though there are many more than just these. Many have confusing names: for instance, "mountain lion" is another name for the puma. Wild cats live throughout the world, including both North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Many particular species are facing extinction due to hunting and habitat loss. Differing levels of attention are given to each of these cases, and while some species are recovering from endangerment, others are only nearing a permanent end.
