Facts: Panther is a name for several cat species, including leopards, jaguars, lions, and tigers. Though some regions call one or another species panthers, there is, in fact, no specific cat in taxonomy that goes by the name. In North America, pumas (such as the Florida panther) are called panthers; in South America, jaguars are referred to as panthers; and throughout the rest of the world, leopards bear the name. Frequently, however, the term is used to refer to melanistic (black-furred) individuals of these species; these are sometimes also called black panthers. In most cases, the normal markings are still visible, though only barely, despite the dark coloration of the animal. The melanistic trait works differently in each species; for instance, in jaguars, it is a dominant gene, whereas in leopards, it is recessive. (Facts from Wikipedia.org - Panther)
