Facts: Ocelots are small wild cats native to Central and South America, as well as parts of Mexico and possibly Texas. They are among the small wild cats, measuring up to three feet long and weighing twenty to thirty-five pounds. Ocelots hunt various small animals, including snakes, fish, and birds; this is in contrast to larger cats, which frequently hunt animals two or more times their own size. Kittens tend to be born in litters of two to four. Ocelots spend at least some of their time in the trees, where their camoflage hides them well. Unfortunately, due to the ocelot's jaguar-like patterning it has been heavily hunted for its fur. Because of this, the ocelot is an endangered species in most of the countries it inhabits; however, its overall conservation status, maintained by the World Conservation Union, is "Least Concern", a broad category indicating relative safety of the species.
