Facts: In general, kittens are young domestic cats, though the term can also apply to pre-adolescent wild cats, rabbits, rats, hedgehogs, or squirrels (the rest of this fact block only regards young domestic cats). Kittens are born in litters of three to six, though they sometimes are born alone or in pairs. Newborns' eyes are closed for about the first seven to ten days. Full visual acuity doesn't develop until about three months of age. Mother cats will feed their kittens milk exclusively for about the first month, after which solid foods are integrated into the diet. Play among kittens is common after two or three weeks as they develop strength and coordination. After about twelve weeks, a baby kitten is sufficiently developed physically and socially to live apart from its mother, and most reputable cat breeders will not sell a cat before it reaches about three months of age.
