Facts: Jaguars are big cats that live throughout much of South and Central America. Powerful and stealthy hunters, they usually seek prey much larger than themselves, such as tapirs, deer, and caiman. As apex predators, Jaguars control the populations of other large animals in their habitat. Female jaguars give birth to a few cubs at a time, not often more than four. In the wild, they live about ten years. The largest cats native to the New World, jaguars can grow to six feet long (not counting the tail) and weigh over 200 pounds. Sometimes, jaguars have entirely black fur; these animals are frequently called black panthers. Jaguars feature heavily in the ancient American civilizations of the Mayans and Aztecs. They were believed to be highly spiritual in nature. The Aztecs even named a class of elite warriors after Jaguars. Many modern Central and South American cultures still see the Jaguar as a symbol of power. (Facts from Wikipedia.org - Jaguar)
