Facts: The domestic cat is a small feline, referred to by scientists as Felis silvestris catus. It is considered to be an offshoot of the African wild cat, to which domestic cats are very closely related (they are actually different subgroups of the same species). Cats were domesticated between four and eight thousand years ago; as humans settled and began growing crops, cats would reduce populations of vermin that would otherwise eat stored grain. Among the broader family of cats, domestic cats are quite versatile, able to hunt over a thosuand species of food. Domestic cats weigh between five and twenty-five pounds, depending on the breed. If kept indoors, a cat can live for fifteen to twenty years. Most cats sleep over twelve hours a day. (Facts from Wikipedia - Cat)
